오늘의 소식
지난 7월 11일 호르무즈 해협에서의 선박 공격을 계기로 시작된 미국-이란 충돌이 이번 주 들어 계속 확대되고 있습니다. 미군의 공습은 이제 테헤란 인근 지역까지 이르렀고, 미군은 카르그 섬으로 향하던 이란 유조선까지 타격했습니다. 이에 이란은 요르단·바레인·쿠웨이트 내 미군 관련 시설을 향해 미사일과 드론으로 반격했으며, “끝까지 저항하겠다”는 입장을 공식적으로 밝혔습니다. 확전이 이제 걸프 지역 전체로 번지는 양상입니다.
The US-Iran conflict that began with a July 11 ship attack in the Strait of Hormuz has continued to widen this week. US strikes have now reached the Tehran area, and the US has also struck an Iranian tanker bound for Kharg Island. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes on US-linked sites in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait, and has formally vowed to “resist until the end.” The escalation is now spreading across the wider Gulf region.

Pray for the protection of civilians near Tehran and in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait amid this escalation, and for the safety of sailors navigating waters near Kharg Island. Pray that US and Iranian leadership would make real decisions this week to halt further escalation, and that the governments of Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait would be able to protect their people while playing a mediating role.

오늘의 소식
크네셋이 10월 27일 총선을 앞두고 오늘 공식 해산 절차를 밟습니다. 그런데 해산 직전, 연정 내 샤스당 대표 아리에 데리가 선거 자금 지원 법안(크네셋 해산 조항 포함) 표결을 미루겠다고 위협하며 막판 진통이 있었습니다. 데리는 야당도 이 법안에 찬성표를 던질 것을 요구했지만, 야당은 이를 거부하며 연정 스스로 표를 모아야 한다는 입장입니다. 한편 최근 채널13 여론조사에 따르면, 아이젠코트가 이끄는 야시르당이 23석으로 제1당이 되고 네타냐후의 리쿠드가 21석, 베네트·라피드의 투게더당이 15석을 얻어, 반(反)네타냐후 진영이 근소하게 61석 과반을 확보하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 다당제 구조상 어느 한쪽도 압도적이지 않은 팽팽한 국면입니다.
The Knesset is formally dispersing today ahead of the October 27 election. Just before dispersal, Shas chairman Aryeh Deri threatened to delay a vote on the election funding bill (which includes the dispersal clause), demanding opposition parties also vote in favor — a demand the opposition has rejected, insisting the coalition must supply its own votes. Meanwhile, a recent Channel 13 poll shows Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party as the largest with 23 seats, Netanyahu’s Likud with 21, and Bennett and Lapid’s Together party with 15, giving the anti-Netanyahu bloc a narrow 61-seat majority. With so many parties in play, neither bloc holds a decisive edge.

Pray that Aryeh Deri, coalition leadership, and opposition leaders would move beyond the power struggle over the funding bill toward real decisions for voters. Pray that as the election season unfolds toward October 27, parties like Yashar, Likud, and Together would focus on building leadership capable of actually carrying Israel’s security and social cohesion, and that voters would cast their ballots with discernment rather than fear or manipulation, given the narrow margins.

This week the Knesset passed a law splitting the attorney general’s powers between two offices. Religious Zionism MK Simcha Rothman, who led the legislation, called it “a historic change” that “restores legal advice to its natural role” and “strengthens Israeli democracy,” and said he intends to revive a dropped provision fully separating the power to indict senior officials from the attorney general’s role. In response, Democrats MK Gilad Kariv, together with the Zulat Institute and former ministers and legal experts, petitioned the High Court against the law. The same week, opposition parties criticized a media overhaul law as “Erdogan style.” With two major bills touching the judiciary and the press passing back-to-back just before the election, tension over checks and balances is rising.

Pray that Simcha Rothman, who authored this law, and Gilad Kariv and the High Court justices who are reviewing the petition against it, would all seek Israel’s long-term good and genuine justice rather than partisan advantage. Pray also regarding the media overhaul law, that honest reporting would not be chilled, and that Israeli society would not lose all mutual respect during this sensitive season.

Talks between Israel and Lebanon that began in Rome on July 15-16 are continuing, focused on establishing a disarmament mechanism for so-called “pilot zones” tied to an IDF withdrawal from southern Lebanon. In parallel, a US military delegation has been meeting directly with the Lebanese army in Beirut. On the ground, tension remains real — IDF forces operating in the southern Lebanon security zone recently discovered a body tied to a stretcher, now under forensic investigation. Whether the Rome talks translate into actual implementation, not just words, is this week’s real question.

Pray for comfort for the families connected to remains still being found in the southern Lebanon security zone, for the full truth to come to light, and for the safety of IDF soldiers serving in that area.

Pray for genuine healing and restoration for each of the 50,000 veterans affected by this overhaul and their families. Pray that the newly funded staff and expanded budget would translate from plans on paper into real, heartfelt care on the ground, and that the Defense Ministry team leading this overhaul would be given wisdom and a sustained sense of urgency.
